Perhaps in an unconscious way, they are trying to prove that love is the toughest job in the world. The cycle is always repeating itself, and there's a certain time where it can really kick you hard. But, it also proves that it's the only thing that'll give you more satisfaction than anything else in the world... If you are willing to work for it and help flourish it.
